90 Million Mobile Internet Devices Shipped Through 2012: Report

Around 90 million mobile internet devices and 5 million ultramobile PCs will be shipped over the next five years, according to a study by ABI Research. Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) are defined as devices which run Windows and business applications and are aimed at business users, while Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) target consumers and are more likely to run a Linux operating system. “Because many of these devices would be small and have limited battery power, [ABI vice president Stan] Schatt says, many of them would save power by being based on Linux instead of Windows. The most well-known Linux-based platform is currently being developed by Intel, which debuted its plans to enter the nascent MID market in April,” reports PC World. Schatt also suggests that ultramobile PCs haven’t really done enough to differentiate themselves from laptops, and will therefore struggle…
