AT&T To Preload Banking App On Handsets

By James Quintana Pearce - Tue 13 Nov 2007 06:03 AM PST

AT&T (NYSE: T) will preload a banking application onto its handsets, a move which is intended to make the icon easy to find by users. It has also added banks Wachovia and SunTrust to the service, which already includes BancorpSouth, FirstBank, Synovus, and financial institutions Regions Financial Corporation, America First Credit Union and Arvest Bank Group. The service is provided by Firethorn and will let customer of those banks (and AT&T) view account balances and history, transfer funds and pay bills. Last month Verizon (NYSE: VZ) also announced it would preload the Firethorn banking application on its handsets. With mobile banking services there isn’t much benefit with exclusivity—no-one is going to change their bank or their carrier to get mobile banking (well, an insignificant number may change) so carriers need to offer access to the most number of banks, and banks need to get deals with all the carriers.

    Hi,

I found your blog a very good source of information. It is very informative!

I am a student at the Columbia University of NY and currently doing a research paper on the subject of mobile banking. I am of the firm belief that Mobile banking is there to stay and is definitely beginning to gain traction in the United States.

For that matter I also came across a lot of vendors providing solutions in the mobile banking space in the process of doing my research. And when I look it from the vendors point of view how do I take into account the risk involved in these investments. I want to know how vendors of mobile banking such as mfoundry, firethorn, obopay and the host of other new players entering the market are able to justify there investments.

In particular what kind of discount factor or cost of capital do startups providing mobile banking solutions go with when venturing into creating solutions for mobile banking considering that mobile banking has still not started to generate any substantial revenue for banks.

I would appreciate your advice and suggestions in helping me solve this puzzle.

    Thanks,
    Rakesh
