AT&T’s Mobile TV Launch Through MediaFlo Delayed Until Early Next Year

By Rafat Ali - Thu 25 Oct 2007 08:43 PM PST

Not really a surprise: giving launch dates, or even months, for such big and high-infrastructure-dependent services is probably a bad idea to start with. AT&T (NYSE: T) is delaying the launch of its mobile broadcast TV service it was working on with Qualcomm’s (NSDQ: QCOM) MediaFlo USA. Now, it will launch early next year, instead of this year, reports Reuters. An AT&T spokesperson told Reuters (NSDQ: RTRSY) that the delay was due to the company’s efforts to fine-tune the service, but he gave no specific details.

Rival Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) launched its mobile TV service, also using MediaFlo, in March this year, but has seen slow uptake and national rollout.

I do not think, as suggested in the article, that verizon is going to drop their interactive TV programme.
Although I am not an expert, I for instance use interactive TV-Channels oft Kyte.tv quite frequently.
It gives me possibilities i would otherwise not have, i can chat with my friends, send out birthday greetings, use the mobilephone to make live streams of what i am doing at the moment.
I am positive, that the future lies in interacting media, not only TV, but also for blogging and corporate uses etc.

The delay of the service, ie. Mobile TV using MediaFLO is quite natural considering a series of events which the US market has been witness to in 2007. These include the launch of the iPhone, the launch of 3G services themselves and the need to take into account some of the ventures in DVB-H such as Modeo which had to be recast. We also do not share the view that the FLO technology has a poor future just because of delays in launch of mobile TV in the US. The US market has been always differnt in respect of both handsets as well as the services, with 3G-UMTS as well as GSM coming much later. MobiTV, which provides streaming TV services has over 2 million customers in the Americas. We believe that once FLO is launched in 2008, it will have a strong take up.
