Bluetooth could get a boost in speed by being linked to Wi-Fi technology—already available in many devices. The AP reports that if Bluetooth were tied to Wi-Fi, transferring large amounts of data between computers and cell phones—such as sending a photo between a camera phone and a printer--could become much easier and quicker. Bluetooth Special Interest Group director Michael Foley said the industry group will start working on the technology and hopes to make it available by the middle of next year. Currently, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi work off of separate chips, but the group is looking into using single chips to combine their capabilities. A combination of the two would let Bluetooth to recognize and establish a connection between devices, while Wi-Fi would then be used to transfer the data.
