Carriers Prefer QR Codes To Bluetooth; Paris In Bluetooth Maps, Guides Trial

By James Quintana Pearce - Sun 16 Sep 2007 04:38 PM PST

Reuters has a piece on “mobile marketing”, which in this article refers to Bluetooth and QR Code marketing. There’s a couple of interesting points (not including QR codes also being refered to as Code 2D): Carriers reportedly don’t like Bluetooth marketing because they don’t get any revenue, whereas QR codes require the user to have a data plan. Orange has asked its manufacturers to supply it with cameraphones with QR Code capabilities from early 2008. In Paris they’re using Bluetooth to offer “maps and updated what’s-on guides beamed from 20 of the city’s self-hire bike stations, which have been all the rage since they were installed in July”. Part of that is to “test the public’s ability to use Bluetooth and their appetite for such ‘take-away’ information”, but it could also get people used to the idea of getting things via Bluetooth.
