Interview: Jeff Sellinger, New EVP & GM, CBS Mobile; Outgoing Exec Roeding Looking For Next Venture
By Tricia Duryee - Mon 24 Mar 2008 06:14 PM PST
We posted earlier today that Jeff Sellinger will become the new EVP and GM of CBS Mobile following the announcement that Cyriac Roeding is leaving to “pursue various entrepreneurial endeavors.” I spoke to Sellinger briefly this afternoon.
Roeding joined what was then CBS Digital in 2005 to lead its wireless efforts and became head of the CBS Mobile division when it was created last year. Sellinger joined CBS in 2005, but was promoted more recently to overall operations as SVP. In that position, he was in charge of everything from the 24-hour mobile TV network to mobile video to in-show mobile campaigns and mobile advertising. Because of his vast responsibilities, Sellinger said not much will change with Roeding’s departure, “except that we lose a brilliant guy,” who is strong on “the strategy side and overall vision.”
Sellinger said the company’s strategy will be the same going forward, and that he expects CBS to continue “to innovate and be aggressive...Our goal is to create as many touch points for audience as we can have for them and to have it be a personalized and relevant experience. We’ll push into mobile advertising, and we’ll personalize the content and provide opportunities for more advertising to be more targeted.”
Sellinger said Roeding is an entrepreneur at heart, and he felt his job was done at CBS (NYSE: CBS). Sellinger offered the pick of two of Roeding’s sayings—either a “bird is flying” or “the baby is walking”: “That’s were we are at. We’ve built a pretty nice business here with a great team and an incredible culture. His work is done...He’s a good friend of mine, and it was a privilege and an honor to work for him. I learned a ton from him.”
Rafat adds: I had a brief chat with Cyriac this morning..he says he has nothing planned at this point, and will do a world tour of sorts. He gave his two pet sayings, the “flying” and the “walking” parts. He said during his travels, he will be on the hunt for the next cool thing, and it could be mobile, but could also be the convergence of mobile and online. “I will be making the scary journey of not knowing what I’ll do next.”
He said the CBS Mobile unit is profitable, and had done a slew of launches over the last two years. Also, mobile advertising has been a big focus for the company. As for trends, he agrees on the mobile-Web convergence as the big push. Still, him leaving in the middle of the biggest March Madness season, where efforts from CBS Mobile are at their peak, will raise some eyebrows (Update: Cyriac informs us he won’t leave in the middle, but towards the end, right after CTIA show.)
