CMMB Network Being Built In China, Despite Lack Of Standard Selection

By James Quintana Pearce - Mon 14 Jan 2008 03:06 AM PST

There are more signs that the Chinese mobile TV standard will be CMMB, despite the China National Standardization Administration (CNSA) trying to decide between 5 standards. According to this piece at Digitimes, SARFT is so confident its CMMB standard will be the chosen one it has “continued to ignore the standard-formation process with plans to install CMMB-compliant networks in 37 major cities in China...In addition, the CMMB camp also plans to launch a satellite, codenamed CMMB-STAR, in June 2008 that will enable CMMB broadcast signals to reach a total of 324 cities by July.” So it’s building the network anyway, and it’s unlikely to be asked to tear it down later, and CMMB did get the backing of the $54 million fund mentioned last month. Of course, by ignoring the standard selection process the technology just may be deployed in time for the Olympics…
