Earnings: Electronic Arts Q1 Revenues Fall 4.4 Percent, Mobile Revenues Increase 140 Percent

Video game marketer Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) did not score high for its full-year 2006 results, nor its first quarter (last financial quarter) results. For the first quarter ending March 31st the company reported its revenue fell 4.4 percent to $613 million, with gross profit falling 4.8 percent year-on-year to $378 million...non-GAAP net income dropped 56 percent to $19 million from $43 million a year ago. The company increased its loss for the quarter to $25 million, up from $16 million a year ago.
For the full year results for the 12 months ending March 31 net revenue was $3.091 billion, an increase of 4.7 percent over the prior year. Gross profit came in at $1.879 billion for the year, an increase of six percent, and net income came in at $76 million, a large fall from the $236 million for the prior year.
Other highlights:
-- EA’s mobile phone game sales came in at $36 million for the first quarter, a 140 percent increase over the corresponding quarter a year ago, when it had $15 milllion in revenue. That equates to about 5.9 percent of EA’s total revenue for the period.
-- FY06’s digital revenue $127 million - a 47 percent rise year-over-year.
-- For the year, mobile games brought in $140 million for EA, and $40 million of operating profit at a margin of 20 percent.
-- EA predicts that the global mobile game industry will grow by 20-25 percent during 2007, fueled by new handset sales as well as more people buying games. It predicts its mobile revenue will surpass $175 million.
-- EA Mobile plans to release 30 to 35 games on cellular handsets and four games on the iPod.
-- EA will increase the number of games that will support in-game advertising on the PC and 360, and is also looking at in-game advertising in mobile games.
-- In its earnings forecast for the current fiscal year, EA expects net revenue to be between $3.1 and $3.4 billion, with non-GAAP net revenue ranging from $3.6 to $3.8 billion.
