EU Opening In-Depth Probe into TomTom’s Bid for Tele Atlas

By Joseph Weisenthal - Wed 28 Nov 2007 12:03 PM PST

The EU has announced that it will open an in-depth probe into TomTom’s proposed acquisition of Tele Atlas, citing Tele Atlas’ position as one of two significant providers of digital maps for portable navigation devices. As is customary, the probe, which must be wrapped up by April 17, 2008, does not prejudge the outcome: “Navigable digital maps are essential inputs for producers of PNDs. The proposed acquisition raises vertical competition concerns because TomTom acquires one of the current two map suppliers that provide maps for the whole of Europe. The Commission’s in-depth investigation will focus, inter alia, on assessing whether the transaction would increase the costs of other PND manufacturers for navigable digital map or limit their access to these maps, and as a consequence harm consumers.” Full statement.

In light of the announcement, the companies have extended the acceptance period for the offer to March 31, 2008, with the possibility of a further extension if necessary. Release.
