European Roaming Charges Cap Passed In To Law; Starts Saturday

By Robert Andrews - Thu 28 Jun 2007 10:32 AM PST

A European Union law capping mobile roaming charges across the bloc comes in to force on Saturday, ensuring consumers should pay no more than 0.49 euro per minute for placing calls. Subscribers had complained about unpredictability and high charges when traveling and on holiday. As part of the new legislation, they will now get a text message notifying them of charges in the countries to which they are traveling. Costs for receiving roaming calls will be capped at 0.24 euro, all costs falling farther in following years. The earlier proposals have now been signed in to law. Text messaging is not included. (European Parliament release).
