FCC Continues Ban On In-Flight Cellphones

The Federal Communications Commission has announced it has dropped plans to review the prohibition of using mobile phones on aircraft, which follows a recommendation to do this from the FCC chairman. “The regulators said it was “premature” to decide the issue because they had not received enough technical information from commenters to determine whether portable electronic devices would interfere with aircraft operations,” reports ZDNet, although the big issues are with the havoc it would cause on terrestrial base stations. There’s also a distinct antipathy in the general population to having some loudmouth hold a phone conversation beside them for several hours. This inhibits mobile content also, of course, although WiFi on planes is going ahead so WiFi enabled phones can still access the internet—and if they have Skype…
