Google Dominates Mobile Search: Report

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) dominates the mobile-search market, owning up to 61 percent of the mobile searches in the U.S. during the first quarter, according to Nielsen Mobile. Trailing behind Google is Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), with 18 percent, and in distant third is MSN with only 5 percent. There’s been an overarching question for some time as to whether consumers will be driven to use the same brands on the mobile phone as they use on the internet today, and these results seem to suggest that is true. Release. The survey also found:

-- Demographics: Google and Yahoo! users skew male with Google seeing 65 percent and Yahoo seeing 63 percent of searches coming from men.

-- Frequency of searches: Google users search the most often with an average of conducting 9 searches a month. Yahoo! is the third most frequently-used provider with users searching 6.7 times a month. The release did not say which one was the second-most searched.

-- What are they looking for?: Google and Yahoo users are looking for the same stuff. For both engines, the No. 1 category is information, next is local listings and third is Web sites or navigation.

-- In terms of satisfaction, users definitely don’t seem that happy with results: 44 percent of Google users and 40 percent of Yahoo! users rated their experience between an 8 and 10.
