Google Launches Speedy Search App For Nokia Smartphones

By Tricia Duryee - Fri 22 Feb 2008 10:18 AM PST

A new Google (NSDQ: GOOG) search application for Nokia (NYSE: NOK) phones makes getting to the search box and receiving results much faster, Google said Thursday on its blog. The app shortcut is embedded on the phone’s idle homescreen, so you can search without launching a browser.

At Mobile World Congress, Nokia announced it was integrating Google into its Mobile Search Application, but this appears to be a separate development. In that announcement, Nokia picked Google for its Nokia Search application that searches the Web and other messages, contacts, music, and other files stored on a mobile device. The search integration was expected first on the Nokia N96, N78, 6210 Navigator, and 6220 classic mobile phones by the second and third quarter.

This application is available now to anyone who has an N-series or an E-series Nokia phone, and can be downloaded by going to mobile.google.com on your phone. Google said the application reduces the average time to complete a search by up to 40 percent. A side-by-side search comparison is provided in this video:
