Google Rolls Out Mobile Tricks Channel On YouTube

By Matt Kapko - Thu 10 Jul 2008 06:14 PM PST

A new YouTube channel dedicated to sharing tips on all the productive (and not so productive) things people can do with their mobile phones has generated plenty of interest and driven traffic to the weeks-old page, with one video already getting more than 2 million views in about a week, according to Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Mobile. Carriers and countless companies in the space are trying to drive data adoption and educate customers on all the capabilities of today’s cellphones, and with this move Google seems to be helping, even as it tries to monetize YouTube, which has prominent placement on the iPhone.

Google is asking its legion of mobile users and YouTube fans to make a video clip of the “wackiest, coolest or most useful mobile trick” and submit it to the Mobile Tricks page. OK, so not all of the submissions are very useful or productive, but Google is highlighting some of its favorites. A video on holographic messaging on an iPhone has already received more than 2 million views in about a week and became one of the top-viewed videos this month almost overnight, according to the search giant. There’s also a satirical take on saving America, a student querying Google via SMS for help during a biology class, and finally a dude in a lab coat and safety glasses chopping an iPhone into smithereens inside a kitchen blender just for the heck of it. More videos appear after the jump…
