Google Seeks Open-Access Pledge From Verizon

By James Quintana Pearce - Mon 05 May 2008 01:32 PM PST

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is still not confident that Verizon (NYSE: VZ) will honor the open access rules on the C block of the recent US spectrum auction, which requires Verizon to allow customers to connect wireless devices of their choosing and run any applications… and has therefore asked the FCC to obtain a pledge from Verizon that it will honor the open-access conditions before selling the spectrum to the carrier reports the New York Times. Google gives a whole list of reasons why it is suspicious of Verizon’s commitment to the open access conditions, and “doesn’t explicitly spell out what the company wants the FCC to do if Verizon doesn’t pledge to follow the open-access rules, but it implies that the FCC shouldn’t sell Verizon the spectrum in that case”. Some have been worried that Verizon’s definition of “open access” would be different from others, but it sounds like Google will keep on Verizon to get the network it wants.
