Helio Takes a Closer Look; “Realigning” Its Sales And Distribution Effort; Cutting 100 Jobs

By Rafat Ali - Thu 30 Aug 2007 12:30 PM PST

Updated: the company is cutting 100 jobs, according to a commenter below, and confirmed by Helio spokesperson. Most of these, as we mentioned below, are in field sales.

Original post: The Earthlink (Nsdq: ELNK) and SK Telecom-owned MVNO Helio is taking a closer look at its business, after a series of meetings at the company: the company is making changes in it sales and distribution strategy, and will now focus on major/urban markets instead of nationwide, according to Helio spokesperson I spoke to earlier. No word on any layoffs, but the company now has close to 600 employees (from an earlier of about 700, before this job cut). Compared to a typical MVNO, Helio outsources very little of its work, and owns customer service and billing operations as well, hence the large number of employees. These changes will not affect its five standalone stores in San Diego, LA, Denver, Palo Alto and NYC, even though from anecdotal evidence, all of them are pretty low on any customers. The company will now focus on expanding its direct mall kiosks, which it said have been successful in getting subscribers.

Om also reports on this, and has this tidbit: The product and services team is being paired down because the services road map has been drastically reduced to focus more on the core phone features and a few premium ones.

This comes as parent Earthlink announced 900 job cuts earlier this week, though the new CEO Rolla Huff has expressed his support to the venture. Helio had losses of $83.8 million in Q2. According to Korean newspaper Chosun, SKT has also expressed continued support and optimism: An SK Telecom official said, “Helio has potential if it achieves the goal of luring 250,000 subscribers by the end of the year. Of course, we’re discussing insurance against unforeseen incidents, too.”

It’s true. Today in a series of solemn calls into tiny unfurbished offices, over 100 employees at Helio were given their walking papers. I can only imagine the discouragement of so many top managers and desginers who came to launch the next big thing in wireless only to be on their way to the next big flop.

Oh well, I am sure that their severance was generous, they are a jv of Earthlink afterall. We still have high hopes for you, Helio.

Helio, a low margin MVNO with the cost structure of a fat telco.

How could they ever sell that story ?

The company is doomed and will fail in the urban markets.  The market is too
competitive for MVNOs eg ESPN, AMPED, RIP… Here’s an illustration:  they have
a store on 3rd street promenade in L.A that I popped into one recent Saturday.  I was considering switching carriers because my Verizon contract was expired and I wanted a new phone.  The Helio phone was decent but would have cost me $20 more a month + the cost of the phone.  I had an upgrade credit with Verizon + they offered me a free month of service so of course I re-upped my contract with them.  Helio is deflating fast…

I have had My Helio phone for over 5 months, and i must say that not one person in here knows what they are talking about.  unless you want to be charged up the wazoo then be my guest.  I pay 85 a month for 1000 minutes and UNLIMITED.....and i mean completely UNLIMITED ,text messages, video messages, nights and weekends, mobile to mobile, internet access, myspace mobile( which is so friggin’ sweet and easy to use), it even has GPS and google maps, which i’ve used so many times in my car when i get lost.  I also get FREE and UNLIMITED you tube access.  Instant uploads to both flickr and youtube right from my phone in just a few clicks!!!  Great coverage and the best customer service i’ve ever experianced from a cell phone company.  Do your homework before you rip helio.  the ocean is the worlds first and(currently) only dual slider in the USA and the FIN is the USA’s thinnist flip phone available....and yes its thinner than the razr and razr2.  i have even got 4 people to switch and they love the service and all the unique functions of there new oceans.

I agree with you Carlos.  Helio is the modern carrier of today.  They have cutting edge handsets with services that the telcos just won’t touch.  The comparison would be like comparing newspaper = telcos with Internet = Helio.

We have been dealers of wireless service for a long time and no company has made such a big impact as Helio.  We started selling Helio and it was just 20% of our market share, now it is over 80% of the share.  We represent all the major wireless carriers and sit down and do a top to bottom comparison of what is best for the customer.  You don’t have to take my word for it because we just plug the information on the computer and have the computer figure out the best plan and right now 80%+ go with Helio.  That is the bottom line.  It’s not easy to start a MVNO, but if there is any hope for the MVNO model then Helio is it.
