iPhone Rumors: 3G Coming In June for $399; Australia Is Next With Multiple Carriers and No Contracts

By Tricia Duryee - Thu 10 Apr 2008 11:25 AM PST

-- The first rumor is that the 3G iPhone will launch in June at Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) WWDC 2008, according to TG Daily. It reports there’s likely to be an 8 GB version for $399 and a 16 GB version for $499, and there’s an outside chance of a 32 GB device for $599. Very few differences are expected, other than it will boost a speedier network (of course) and a 2.5 mm thinner body.

-- The second rumor is that Apple has started telling resellers their iPhone strategy in Australia, and the details seem suspiciously untrue. MacTalk is reporting that the phone will launch in Australia in the last week of June, meaning that it could include the 3G version (if the above rumor is correct); the phone will be available through two carriers; the phone won’t be locked and tied down to a contract, and resellers will be able to sell the device in addition to the carriers and Apple stores. Again, it’s hard to believe that all of these are true. It would mean Apple would be taking a completely different approach to the market, after following suite in each country after launching in the U.S. If you want to believe it is true, MacTalk does a thorough job of examining the reasons why Apple would change course, the least of which is: Australia is a small enough market “that [it] won’t hurt them if it fails.”
