Media Execs Argue Against Use Of White Space For Mobile Internet

By James Quintana Pearce - Thu 11 Oct 2007 04:17 PM PST

Media execs are starting the counter-lobbying against the use of white space for mobile internet services, led by Disney (NYSE: DIS) CEO Robert Iger. “Use of the airwaves may interfere with TV reception, Iger said today in a letter, joined by NBC Universal (NYSE: GE) Chief Executive Officer Jeff Zucker, News Corp. (NYSE: NWS) President Peter Chernin and CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS) Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves...Consumers who buy digital TV sets “have a right to expect their equipment will work,” they told Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin in the letter” reports Bloomberg. The FCC is being lobbied by several companies to free up vacant airwaves for unlicensed uses once the TV broadcasters convert to digital in 2009. The FCC tested a device given them by Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Philips and announced it interfered with nearby TV signals, but Microsoft has claimed the device was broken so the FCC has agreed to retest with another of the devices.
