MediaFLO Tries Temporary Channel To Cover X Games

By James Quintana Pearce - Thu 26 Jul 2007 04:12 PM PST

Qualcomm is trying something which could add a bit of flexibility to its MediaFLO service—a temporary channel. MediaFLO doesn’t offer as many channels as it is technically capable of, and Qualcomm is teaming up with ESPN to offer on the Verizon Vcast TV service the EXPN channel covering the the X Games 13: The channel will run from July 22nd to August 7th. Up until August 2nd it will have highlights of previous years’ games, from 2-5 August it will have live coverage of the current game and on 6-7 August it will show"Best of the X Games” and replays. ESPN’s regular channel on the MediaFLO service will also offer coverage of the games… While broadcast TV will never have the flexibility of unicast TV, this does show that big events can be covered with special channels, and if it’s successful I think we’ll see a lot more examples from MediaFLO and from other broadcast mobile TV networks around the world.
