Microsoft Settles With Visto Over Mobile-Email Patent Dispute; Involves Cash

By Tricia Duryee - Mon 03 Mar 2008 01:20 PM PST

Visto, the mobile e-mail provider, has ended a two-year patent dispute with Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) today. Specific terms of the agreement are confidential, but the settlement includes a license agreement with Microsoft that involves cash and non-cash considerations. A Visto spokeswoman would not elaborate, but both companies are dismissing all pending legal claims. Release.

The case was scheduled to begin on March 10 in U.S. Federal Court in Marshall, Texas, and was centered on alleged infringement by Microsoft on three of Visto’s mobile email patents. Visto still has a pending case against RIM (NSDQ: RIMM), which is set to begin in Texas in July. Last year, Seven Networks settled with Visto, ending a three-year long patent fight.

Based in Redwood Shores, Calif., the company said it has more than 28 patents and sells its Visto Mobile service through more than 30 carriers. Visto uses server, desktop and device software to help users sync their devices with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes and other email.
