ROK Entertainment Group, a company best known for its technology for the mass-market streaming of TV services to 2.5G/3G mobile devices, is preparing to make a play in the market to enable MMS and video-sharing. To this end it has acquired Blubox, a data optimization and compression developer. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Blubox’s technology compresses JPEG files by 80 percent, the companies said in a statement. ROK will deploy a “specially-developed version” of Blubox technologies to enable the fast transfer of images to and from mobile phones and to increase the number of images able to be stored on mobile devices. Blubox’s photo-management app is aimed at uses who want to store and manage their digital photos online. To date, the PC version of Blubox claims 750K users since its launch in October 2006.
