Mobile Social Network MocoSpace Gets $3 Million First Round Funding

By Rafat Ali - Sun 26 Aug 2007 08:41 PM PST

MocoSpace, a mobile social networking startup (nothing to do with us, despite the name), has received $3 million in its first round of funding...the round was led by General Catalyst, Bob Pittman’s Pilot Group and Michael Deering. The Boston-based company has been around for some time, and says it is nearing 1 million members. It has grown organically and has been doing ad campaigns across mobile ad networks such as Third Screen Media and AdMob, it says. Some more info about the company here: “It is an icon-driven, off-deck gateway into profiles, blogs, user-uploaded videos and chats. Siegel says that the audience skews ethnically to African-American and Hispanic members, who comprise more than half the population.”

Its funny that so much of their population is Hispanic considering that ‘Moco’ means booger in spanish

‘MocoNews’, ‘MocoSpace’ pretty easy to mistake one for the other.
Could there be a fight for the name in the future?

I remember when they were copying zedge.net so I guess they are another wannabe clone that found someone to bite.

I always avoided writing here what “moco” means in Spanish, to avoid making Rafat sad. Hope he took it well… smile

Boogernews.net - unhealthly obsessed with picking my nose.

But in all seriousness. Mocospace is a great service and is not centered around mobile content like the name sounds. I personally would never use a WAP based social network unless I was on a blazing 3G phone. Perhaps these networks will become more popular with the mainstream when that happens.
