-- Mobiles bring immediacy to social networks—people can comment on what they’re doing when they’re doing it. The USA Today has a big feature on the space, with some quotes from the companies involved and some vox pop from the users. It covers that fact that an increasing number of social network users are active only on mobile, as well as some of the “creepy” things about mobile social networks such as everyone knowing where you are. “Senior analyst Jill Aldort of the Yankee Group calls ”mobile social networking a hot market with lukewarm potential.” She says just 8 percent of adult mobile phone owners in the USA regularly access mobile social-networking services and sees that rising to 20 percent in 2011. From subscription, browsing and messaging fees, Aldort says, U.S. carriers will take in about $1.5 billion in 2011, up from about $560 million this year. “That’s not a big number.” This prediction doesn’t include advertising revenue, which is likely to be a large part of the monetization of mobile social networks—and the carriers will want to get in on that. Also, a little comment from Facebook: “Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz says its mobile user base is growing faster than the website. As of the end of October, Facebook’s 4 million distinct active users across its mobile lineup generated more than 300 million page views. “Things that are inherently social are inherently mobile,” Moskovitz says.”
-- UK broadcaster ITV will launch a series of mobile communites for its shows which will be branded MyITV, (LSE: ITV) including X-Factor, Loose Women, Britain’s Got Talent, ITV Sport (covering the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and the Formula 1 Grand Prix), and Emmerdale. Loop Mobile (ASX: LPM) was signed to create the communities based on its MOKO platform. The contract includes development fees and a revenue share from user-generated content.
-- MTV is launching a Latino-focused mobile social network around its show Tr3s. The service will let people view photos, send and receive messages, post comments, search profiles and so on, and MTV plans to extend it to the web in the future—the correct order, since the Latin market tends to use mobiles more than PC web. The service is called Con3xion, and MTV signed up Intercasting to run the service on its Anthem platform. (release)
-- Singapore-based BuzzCity has launched its mobile social networking service, myGamma, in Denmark and the Netherlands. It’s an ad-supported off-portal service now in 60 countries. It claims that since January it has delivered more than 5 billion advertising pageviews and more than 125 million clicks for more than 3,000 advertiser campaigns.
