Mobile TV: Uruguay Selects DVB Standard For Mobile and Digital TV

By Ingrid Lunden - Sat 01 Sep 2007 10:51 AM PST

None of this fussing with free market principles first to see what works: The Uruguayan government announced today that it selected the DVB standard for mobile TV services (DVB-H) and digital terrestrial services (DVB-T) that will be rolled out in the country. The decision comes after a year-long evaluation it carried out comparing the standard to others out the of U.S. and Japan. The European Commission, which has been lobbying for Latin American countries to develop more ties with Europe, released a statement in support of the decision, saying how choosing the “European standard” will help foster more ICT relationships between Uruguay and the region: “I welcome Uruguay’s choosing the DVB standards, the first Latin American country to select the European standard. I trust that other countries in the region will follow soon,” said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media (cited in eGov Monitor). No word on when the first services might be expected to come to market.

    Well Done,

I hope that they also follow Europe’s lead and take up DAB to digitise the Radio Services instead of taking the usual reoute of following the USA. In this case though Europe’s clear lead in digital Radio should be the obvious choice!
