Mobile Web Becoming the “Weekend Web”

Is there a difference between the mobile web and the wired web? According to a Businessweek article that’s dug through the latest comScore figures looking at the top web sites on both platforms, the mobile web is fast becoming what the magazine has dubbed “the weekend web.” Over the weekend, mobile web traffic shoots up as more people turn to their phone to access information. They’re also surfing to much different sites, where the emphasis is on fun and planning around it, with weather, entertainment, games, and music emerging as the fastest-growing mobile web categories, according to comScore (NSDQ: SCOR). M:Metrics (which comScore announced it was buying yesterday), reported in March that Craigslist, eBay (NSDQ: EBAY), MySpace, Facebook, and Disney’s Go were the top 5 mobile web destinations. In comparison, the fastest growing PC web site categories are pharmacies, food, cosmetics, and job searches. Companies are already rethinking their mobile offerings, and cutting deals to take advantage of the divide. eBay, for instance, is experimenting with a service that would let people to take a photo with their camera phone of a product’s bar code to allow them to compare the price and availability of it on their site. It’s also struck a deal with UK operator 3 to give subscribers easy access to the site.
