Motorola Announces Standalone DVB-H Mobile TV Device

By Carlo Longino - Thu 03 Jan 2008 03:06 PM PST

Motorola (NYSE: MOT) has announced a standalone DVB-H mobile TV receiver, featuring a 4.3-inch QVGA screen, as well as a memory card slot that can be used to play back content recorded on a DVR. Similar devices for other types of networks are available in Europe and Asia, and the Moto device is aimed for those markets, given that there are no DVB-H networks running or in development in the US after pullbacks by Modeo and Aloha.

While mobile TV for many people means watching video on mobile phones, the standalone market could prove a valuable one, since it allows for viewing devices with larger screens, as well as other applications, such as in-vehicle installation. But this market could get crowded; in addition to mobile-TV providers like MediaFLO, companies like Sirius (NSDQ: SIRI) are vying for a slice with subscription-based services, while free-to-air broadcasters will also certainly respond with their own digital offerings.
