Motorola Plans Movie, Enterprise Handsets To Recover Fortunes

At the Software 2007 conference Motorola CEO Ed Zander has foreshadowed the handsets the manufacturer will announce next week, which will be important in reviving Motorola’s fortunes...or not. One of the handsets will be able to play movies, reports Reuters. “We are going to show a device next week,” Zander told several hundred attendees of the business software conference, saying it would show 30 frames-a-second, full-motion video. “It is a media monster.” The device will initially be targeted at the European market where 3G networks are more widely available—but the movies will likely be on SD cards. Europe, Middle East and Africa have about 31 percent of the worlds mobile video subscribers—Asia Pacific has around 57 percent, North America 10 percent and Latin America 3 percent.
Motorola is also targeting the enterprise market, reports CNet, betting that PC-like features will see smartphones take a more dominant role in home and office technology. “Motorola aims to make smart phones that offer both enterprise and consumer features, including the ability to seamlessly interact with the wired devices in a user’s home. One consumer smart-phone application, for example, would allow a user who is on the road to remotely program a home-based digital video recorder.” Potential business apps include CRM software, forecasting systems and revenue tracking software.
