Motricity Announces Exec Team; Loses COO Steve Elfman To Sprint

By Tricia Duryee - Mon 24 Mar 2008 01:22 PM PST

After announcing that it will move its headquarters to Bellevue to be closer to key personnel, Motricity said today that president and COO Steve Elfman is leaving the company to work at beleaguered Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel as the president of network operations and wholesale business.

It will be interesting to see if Elfman’s departure is a strain on Motricity. Following the acquisition of InfoSpace (NSDQ: INSP) Mobile, the company re-organized the business, announcing that it will lay off 250 employees from its North Carolina headquarters and move to Bellevue, Wash., to join InfoSpace’s offices. Not including Motricity’s CEO and chairman Ryan Wuerch, most of the remaining executives were from InfoSpace, and previously reported to Elfman. In a release, Wuerch said: “We certainly don’t like losing him, but he leaves us in a very strong position. He’s built a great foundation for the business and we have great momentum moving forward. Steve’s entire leadership team remains intact and will continue to lead our business.”

Elfman’s move to Sprint is not a complete surprise. Elfman and Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse previously worked together at both Terabeam and AT&T (NYSE: T) Wireless. In Sprint’s announcement, the company said Elfman, 52, will report directly to Hesse and will start in his new position on May 4. He will oversee the combined network and IT organizations led by Chief Network Officer Kathy Walker, and the wholesale MVNO organization. The wholesale business is led by Jim Patterson, who was recently named as president. In addition, Elfman will also oversee the company’s technology development and product development organizations.

Today, Motricity also announced a complete list of its management team and released financial expectations. The company said it plans to exceed $100 million in net revenue, and is doing everything right to support “long-term, profitable growth.”

It looks like Ryan paid $135Million to Infospace so that he could lay off his whole team in Durham and move to Bellevue to manage Steve Elfman’s organization.  I bet the employees in both places are not exactly jumping for joy.  I wonder what the Operators think?

Never a dull moment around the MoSpace.  It’s like getting paid to live in a soap opera.

Anyone taking bets on the new COO?  Or how long it takes the Bellvue executive team to flee?  What’s Ryan going to do with mCore?  Will there ever be another All Hands meeting?  Tune in next week.

I thought Infotrocity was mess but he’s moving to Sprint!? That’s a gluten for punishment

Are any of the senior leadership team from Durham remaining with the company in any capacity at all?  Are they being slid in under the Bellevue folks?  Any indication as to whether Elfman simply refused to work for Wuerch, was always intended to be pushed out, or if Wuerch didn’t want too much talent and experience too close?  Any pink slips in Durham yet?

Classic Ryan gambit - remove those who disagree or expose your ineptitude.  Welcome to Hell, Infospace employees.

This has nothing to do with Wuerch.  It’s about a long standing relationship between Elfman and Hesse.

I now give you my Projections in the year 2008 for something called Motrcity (sp?):

October 07 Revenue Projection: 1 Billion Dollars coming soon.
    December/January 08 Revenue Projection: 200 Million eoy 2008
March Revenue Projection: just a smidge over 100 Million eoy 2008

For some reason my damn crystal ball doesn’t seem to report past 2008, not sure what the problem is, wait here we go, it says Smithers inadvertedly launches nuclear attack on China using a new mobile app simulating global thermonuclear war games thus ending all civilization for eternity AND giving him one more title: World DESTRUCTOR!!!

Man, InfoSpace is in for a rude and painful awakening.  If I was a infospace employee I would go ahead and start testing the job market right now and beat the rush

You are so stupid you cant even spell the name of the company you’re ragging on, and it’s in the damn article.  You’re such an idiot.

Anyone notice that the House Motricity’s Investors Built has gone on the market for $2.5 million?  Seems like it would be tough to buy and furnish such a place even on the excessive cash salary (salaries?) drawn by the owners.  The listing tells me the monthly payment would be something over $13,000 with 20% down.  Let’s say actually 5% went down, so the monthly payment was $15,000, meaning the annual payments were $180,000!  Since the mortgage was actually “low interest”, annual payments were probably closer to $30,000.  Meaning we can add about $150,000 to whatever salary local VC’s are willing to pay CEO’s of cash-hemorrhaging “companies”.  Not a bad gig in and of itself.  Why get a real job?  Why try to increase the value and probability of eventual exit opportunities?  Just keep making promises, changing the name of the company, building bigger houses, and kicking the can down the road!

nice house: Are you referring to Wuerch’s house is up for sale? Mind posting a link to it?

  • From nice house 3 Tue 15 Apr 2008 02:21 AM

You can use the Wake County tax records to find the address of the house, and Zillow.com to find the asking price and links to listing information.  These are 2 examples of ways to find the truth that RTP-area reporters would do if they weren’t too busy scribbling everything boosters and PR departments told them.
