NAVTEQ Takes Stake In Acuity Mobile

By Dianne See Morrison - Wed 06 Feb 2008 01:38 PM PST

Digital mapping solutions provider NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT) has taken an undisclosed equity stake in location-based advertising technology provider Acuity Mobile. It has also extended its licensing of Acuity Mobile technologies, which will allow it to continue offering its clients the ability to serve up location-based ads. It does not specify what type of ads—either banner or SMS, for example—but they envision a consumer’s mobile mapping application “unobtrusively” presenting ads, offers, coupons, or other promotions, based on their opt-in preferences. Operators, advertisers and media owners have long treated location based ads with caution, but that looks as if it’s about to change. Navteq’s deal comes on the same day that CBS (NYSE: CBS) announced its plans to launch a location-based ad service that will appear on two of its mobile sites: CBS Sports Mobile, and CBS Mobile News. Navteq is currently awaiting its acquisition by Nokia (NYSE: NOK) to close. (release).
