New China Mobile Policy Bad For WAP Service Providers

By Rafat Ali - Sun 10 Jun 2007 05:18 PM PST

As if the Chinese mobile content companies were not reeling enough from SMS restrictions, a new move from dominant operator China Mobile may hurt them even more: it has launched a new “warning screen” during the past few weeks, so that when users go out of CM’s walled garden ("Monternet"), then a warning message flashes, requiring the user to confirm that they intend to navigate outside of the network, and notifying the user that there may be additional charges involved, reports MarketWatch.

Like the anti-spam policies China Mobile instituted last summer, this new WAP warning screen is intended to protect users from unintentional charges and scams, but this new policy will also sting the Nasdaq-listed value-added services providers who are strong in WAP content, particularly KongZhong and SINA.
