Nokia, Microsoft Ink DRM Deal

By Ingrid Lunden - Mon 06 Aug 2007 03:22 AM PST

Or, strange bedfellows get a little cozier. In a bid to be more competitive with the Apple digital entertainment juggernaut, today Nokia (NYSE:NOK) announced it would use Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) PlayReady content management software in its two most popular mobile operating systems, the S60 for premium phones and the Series 40 for lower-end devices, with the PlayReady devices to hit the markets in 2008. The deal extends an agreement from 2005 between the two for Nokia to support the Windows Media platform. release

The DRM-based service covers a range of mobile entertainment services and products--videos, music, games, photos and ringtones among them--and lets users transfer content from handsets to PCs and visa-versa. Reuters, speculates that the deal could potentially dovetail with Nokia’s purchase of Loudeye in July.
