Nokia’s New Internet Service Brand: Ovi

By James Quintana Pearce - Wed 29 Aug 2007 05:18 AM PST

Nokia has announced the brand name that will cover its internet services, Ovi—which is “door” in Finnish. This will cover the N-Gage and Nokia Music Store announced today, as well as access to “existing social networks, communities and content”. It will also cover Nokia Maps, a navigation service with maps and city guides...more services are in the pipeline. The maps services will also have a route finder (with optional voice navigation available for purchase) and the ability to “share your favorite places”. While Ovi is intended to aggregate access to Nokia’s services, it’s a good sign that Nokia doesn’t regard it as a “closed portal” and has third-party services—they’ve learnt from other people’s mistakes. The Nokia Blog has a live report on the conference going.

On handsets: “Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told a London news conference the company would start to sell touch screen phones—Nokia’s answer to Apple’s iconic iPhone handsets—using its popular S60 software next year” reports Reuters.

Photo Sharing: The Ovi site has a photo-sharing section. People with the right phones can upload photos and video clips from their handset, send them to friends or post on a website and blog, create new albums and choose who shares them.

Details on the Nokia Music Store are here, and details of the new N-Gage service are here.
