Nortel has come out saying it will charge “about” a 1 percent royalty rate for its Long Term Evolution patents, although RCR News points out that there’s a fair bit of fine print there. Nortel reckons by publishing its rates it will remove an unknown amount of LTE IPR handset licensing costs and thus foster development. It implies that it didn’t join the framework group promoted by Nokia and Sony Ericsson because “not all patents are created equal”...it reckons its patents are more important to the technology than others. Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) has also declined to join the licensing group, and the biggest fear is that the number of companies wanting a piece of the action will drive up the price of handsets unreasonably...(Nortel Announcement)
