Seattle-based Ontela, which helps users automatically send photos they’ve taken on their phones to their favorite online storage accounts, said today it has raised $10.3 million to grow its product line and expand internationally. Participating in the round is Steamboat Ventures with existing investors Hunt Ventures, Oak Investment Partners and Voyager Capital also investing. Currently, the company’s technology is used by four carriers, Alltel (NYSE: AT), Cellular South, Cincinnati Bell, and as of today nTelos, a regional operator in Virginia. The company said the sale of its service, which typically costs about $2.99 a month including data fees, are higher than expected. At Cellular South, sales were 217 percent above original projections. In addition to being able to send the photos to an e-mail account, or sites such as Photobucket and Snapfish, another benefit is that the service eliminates the need for a customer to buy memory cards because the photos aren’t stored on the device. In 2006, Ontela raised $4.5 million.
