Orange Unveils LiveRadio For WiFi Net Radio In UK

By Robert Andrews - Mon 19 May 2008 01:01 AM PST

After home broadband and TV, add another service to Orange’s growing arsenal - radio. The telco is unveiling LiveRadio, a WiFi-enabled radio device that comes with access to more than 4,000 internet radio stations without a computer. Despite the fuss about the introduction of digital terrestrial and satellite radio services in recent years, it’s clear that the internet is already well stocked with live radio programming - nevermind DAB or XM; IP could well become the ideal radio medium in future. Orange’s device is essentially the Phoenix model made by Com One, a gadget that, through two AA batteries, doubles as a a portable radio and can be used as MP3 player speakers. LiveRadio also does podcasts. Such devices have been on the market for a couple of years now, introduced as take-up of home broadband and wireless has grown. Orange first launched the gadget in its native France back in spring 2007.
