Qualcomm MediaFlo Investment and Losses For 2007

By Rafat Ali - Sat 19 Jan 2008 01:04 PM PST

Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) filed a proxy statement yesterday with SEC which has some details on the investment it did in its mobile TV service MediaFlo in 2007, and the losses associated with it. In U.S., so far it has only rolled out with Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ), and AT&T (NYSE: T) rollout is expected sometime soon (delayed from late last year).

Its QSI segment, which includes MediaFlo as part of its activities, had loss before taxes for fiscal 2007 of $240 million, compared to $133 million for fiscal 2006. “This included a $118 million increase in our MediaFLO USA subsidiary’s loss before taxes comprised primarily of $70 million in cost of services revenues related to the commencement of our MediaFLO services in March 2007 and a $42 million increase in selling, general and administrative expenses, including $20 million related to cooperative marketing expenses.” It used $20 million to promote the Verizon MediaFlo service? Didn’t really register in any substantial way…

Also, QSI’s assets related to the MediaFLO USA business totaled $457 million, $329 million and $98 million at September 30, 2007, September 24, 2006 and September 25, 2005, respectively, it said.
