Rapper Timbaland Rides Verizon Wireless Bus To Record ‘First Mobile Album’

By Tricia Duryee - Fri 08 Feb 2008 04:16 PM PST

Next month, well-known rapper Timbaland will start to record a mobile album by literally creating tracks while on the go. The stunt has been organized by Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) through a new program it calls Mobile Producer in Residence. During the course of the year, Timbaland will record an entire album—what is being called the first mobile album—on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus; the results will be offered exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers through V CAST Music.

Timbaland will work with a guest artist every month to record a new track. As the bus tours through various cities, Verizon said fans will get to see recording sessions either in person or from their mobile phones. It will be interesting to see if Timbaland will be able to attract as many listeners as he normally does—that’s if they share the numbers. In January, Timbaland’s recent “Shock Value” album sold 1.02 million copies. Release.

This sounds like another first. Back in 2005 Cingular Wireless (now AT&T) launched a program called Cingular Sounds. It released songs as 30-second ringtones before they ever came out on the radio or the album was released. The first song was Coldplay’s single “Speed of Sound.” The program didn’t ever gain a lot of traction, however, AT&T (NYSE: T) continues to offer exclusive ringtones today.

What about Timbaland’s fans that don’t subscribe to Verizon? They’re left out in the cold here. This is a cool musical innovation, but could be so much better if it wasn’t exclusive.

Believe it or not, there is a way to distribute audio media to any phone in the United States, regardless of carrier or handset. Content producers should look at the bigger picture. More here: http://fourthspeaker.com
