Sony Pictures Television Launching Linear Film Channel PIX On AT&T’s Upcoming Mobile TV Service

Sony (NYSE: SNE) Pictures Television has struck a deal with AT&T (NYSE: T) and MediaFlo USA to launch the first movie network on mobile phones in the U.S, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The linear offering, named PIX, will be one of two exclusive channels for AT&T’s mobile TV service rolling out in May. It will include movie titles from Sony labels, including Columbia, TriStar, Screen Gems and Sony Classics, with each film running for a month long, with new movies added on weekly.
Sony has been working steadily to get video content onto mobile and is hoping that the new offering will boost its uptake, though SPT recognized the fact that viewing a two-hour long movie on a two-inch screen wasn’t ideal, and noted that the objective wasn’t even to keep subscribers viewing the entire film. Indeed, SPT’s mobile entertainment VP Eric Berger said the service “isn’t for people looking to view a movie for the first time.”
Sony already offers its films on mobile on an on-demand basis, contributing titles to MSpot, which is available on Sprint (NYSE: S). No word yet on how much the exclusive service will cost, or how long the exclusive contract will last. Sony is in talks with other undisclosed networks to distribute PIX, and may even be considering an ad-supported model that would be free to subscribers. They may also turn PIX into an on-demand model, or take the brand onto the web. In January, SPT’s international arm signed a deal with South Korean mobile network SK Telecom to offer on-demand full feature films to subscribers at the cost of $1-$2 a film.
