Sprint Announces WiMAX Branding: Xohm

By James Quintana Pearce - Thu 16 Aug 2007 07:56 AM PST

Sprint has revealed some details about its upcoming WiMAX service—it will be branded Xohm (pronounced Zoam) and a soft launch is expected to happen by the end of 2007 in Chicago, Baltimore and Washington. Commercial services are planned for the first half of 2008, and Sprint expects the network to cover 100 million people by the end of 2008 and 125 million people by 2010—including its network sharing agreement with Clearwire. Sprint’s partners have committed to embed 50 million WiMAX chipsets in devices. Sprint expects to invest about $2.5 billion in capital on its WiMax network through the end of 2008, and expects that the extension of the network to cover 125 million people will cost an additional $2.5 billion.

Sprint also said that it expects its Pivot service (the JV with the cable companies) to be in 40 markets by the end of the year, and to generate new revenue streams through new services, including remote DVR programming and video-on-demand.
