Takeover Rumors Swirl Around Clearwire

By Carlo Longino - Mon 17 Dec 2007 03:57 PM PST

After its proposed WiMax partnership with Sprint (NYSE: S) fell apart last month, rumors about Clearwire’s future continue to get tossed around, as The Register reports. One popular rumor is that Clearwire and Sprint will get back together; other rumors say Intel (NSDQ: INTC), American Tower and an unnamed third party are all interested in taking over Clearwire (NSDQ: CLWR). Of the rumored options, rekindling the Sprint relationship seems the most likely, since even with new owners, Clearwire will face the same problems it does today. Sprint also needs help getting its network built out nationwide, and its investors are already concerned about the level of investment it’s putting into its WiMax network. Sprint is still without a permanent CEO, and that could be holding back any potential arrangement between it and Clearwire.
