TomTom’s Proposed Tele Atlas Purchase Gets EU Clearance

By Dianne See Morrison - Wed 14 May 2008 04:56 AM PST

Car navigation device maker TomTom’s proposed 2.9 billion euro ($4.5 billion) purchase of digital- mapping firm Tele Atlas has received the all clear from the EU. Bloomberg reports that the European Commission’s decision concludes a six-month probe, which saw TomTom rejecting EU demands to license Tele Atlas’s database to create more competition. The approval is also being taken as an indication that the EU will give the go ahead to Nokia’s proposed $8.1 billion Navteq, the world’s largest digital map maker. TomTom wanted Tele Atlas to expand beyond its traditional market of navigation devices and into mapping services for other device markers and car manufacturers.
