UK iPhone Sales Sluggish?

By Rafat Ali - Fri 04 Jan 2008 02:04 PM PST

That’s what some rather anecdotal evidence in UK suggests, according to a story on Mobile Today. Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone launched in UK on November 9th in an exclusive deal with operator O2, but the story says most stores have missed iPhone targets by some distance, with a typical-sized O2 store selling just one iPhone per week. Thise were initial numbers but the story says it picked up closer to Christmas with many stores selling one phone per store per day, and more in bigger stores.

The story says a price cut may be coming to bring the cost of the iPhone down from £270, or an improvement in the tariff.

Well, i am not surprised at all with the disgraceful iPhone sales figures in the mobile market across the UK.

It is quite obvious that Apple and O2 were quite greedy to put their hands in the pockets of the broke UK customers and grab as much money as they can.

What about Apple refusal to publish the sales figures since the iPhone launch Nov 2007? (big question mark)

I am not sure it was the money. I wanted one to link with all my Mac kit after years of frustration using Nokia Communicators tht don’t.

But when the thing launched it was clear tht it was pretty much an iPod with a phone rather than a phone fit for business use, eg no multiple SMS, no cut and paste etc.,

Worse I am not an O2 subscriber & have a good existing mobile deal. I thought the workaround was to buy one unlocked in France but the apparent lack of support & upgrades for tht route, the poor functionality and finally the high (unlocked) price deterred me.  So I bought another Nokia Communicator (E90). The best Communicator was IMHO the 9100. The 9600 and E90 are clunkier, less intuitive and like the top end Ericssons & HPs do too much not entirely well.

However if Nokia wld only introduce a Mac software interface now, I wld stop dreaming of the day when Apple produces a decent iPhone , unlocked & fully supported with all the features tht it currently lacks.
