Verizon Launches Song ID Service

By James Quintana Pearce - Tue 22 May 2007 01:25 AM PST

Verizon Wireless has launched V Cast Song ID, which lets people hold their phone towards music and have the software identify the music. Customers can then buy the full-track, ringtone or ringback from Verizon’s store. The service is offered as a free download—charging people would be counter-productive since the service is all about discovering and downloading mobile content. It isn’t said who Verizon has gone with for the service, but a number of companies offer it (eg Shazam and m-Venue). This sort of service should have been offered a long time ago… maybe the upcoming iPhone had Verizon casting about for a new music service to offer. Hmm, maybe it will be a boost for the industry after all… (release)
