WiMax Handsets In The US Early 2008

By James Quintana Pearce - Wed 26 Sep 2007 05:53 PM PST

WiMax devices are due to hit the US next year… Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president for handsets at Samsung Telecommunications America, talked about launching a number of different products (phones, laptops, game consoles, UMPCs, etc) for Sprint (NYSE: S) and other carriers in the first quarter of 2008; Nokia (NYSE: NOK) expects to hit the market in the first half of next year, probably with internet tablets; Motorola (NYSE: MOT) plans to deliver mobile WiMax devices in the second half of next year according to RCR News. “Initially, retail pricing for WiMAX-enabled smartphones will be $400 to $600 before subsidies, Solis said. In the U.S. market, aggressive subsidies of perhaps $200 might bring prices down to the $200 to $400 range, the analyst said. WiMAX-enabled consumer electronics devices will sell through typical consumer electronics retail channels and thus will not be subsidized.”

RCR News also has a five-minute interview with Don Stroberg, VP of sales for Sprint Nextel Corp.’s new Xohm Business unit.
