DoCoMo’s New Music Service; Using Windows Mobile DRM Worldwide

By Rafat Ali - Thu 11 May 2006 12:05 PM PST

We mentioned about DoCoMo’s new full-track downoad service last night; some more details: The new service, which will start as soon as June, uses a high-speed data transmission technology to allow downloads at 10 times the speed of DoCoMo’s 3G FOMA handsets....3.5G phones, whatever that means. DoCoMo is also preparing other movie content for its 3.5G handsets but detailed information is not available at this point.
Also announced: DoCoMo will begin adding support for the Windows Media DRM 10 system to its cell phones, starting with the F902iS handset that will go on sale in the middle of this year. The deal extends to DoCoMo’s overseas partners in its I-mode alliance, which will consider the use of Windows Media DRM, DoCoMo said.
Telecoms.com:
The partnership will allow DoCoMo users’ handsets, and potentially those of any i-mode provider worldwide, to play music downloaded to a PC from more than 100 online music services around the world, and also support music content ripped from CDs in Windows Media Audio format.
This could also be a blow to OMA DRM backers: Microsoft’s DRM may be just one of a total of 13 proposals being evaluated by the GSM Association (GSMA), but DoCoMo’s support of Microsoft’s DRM adds weight to the chance that a proprietary solution could become the de facto choice just by being commonly used, says Telecoms.com.
