Vodafone Signs Mobile Deal With MySpace, Initial Launch Set for U.K.

By Peggy Anne Salz - Wed 07 Feb 2007 11:46 AM PST

Vodafone has inked an exclusive deal with MySpace allowing mobile users in the U.K. access to the social networking website on the move. Under the terms of the tie-up MySpace members can access the mobile version of the site via preloaded Vodafone handsets. The service will also be available for download from the Vodafone portal.

The Vodafone deal with MySpace marks the first time that the Fox Interactive Media unit of News Corp. has made its MySpace.com portal available to European mobile users. The service will be available in the first half of 2007 “The partnership will enable millions of Vodafone customers to access MySpace mobile, allowing them to edit their own MySpace profiles, find and add friends, post photos and blogs and send and receive MySpace messages while on the move,” the two companies said in a statement. Press release

There’s a lot of coverage on the deal, but no comment on the details yet. The Guardian reports that neither company has so far divulged the price of the MySpace Mobile service or the length of the exclusive period under the deal. It is thought to be, at the very maximum, one year. The article also points out the two companies have also entered a co-marketing deal that is likely to see MySpace promoted within Vodafone advertising.

MySpace counted 90 million unique visitors worldwide in December. Vodafone has about 16.9 million customers in the UK. In December, MySpace launched a similar deal with Cingular Wireless.
