Yahoo Sees More Mobile Internet Users Than PC Internet Users By 2017

By James Quintana Pearce - Sat 24 Nov 2007 10:04 PM PST

Despite a number of false dawns of the start of the mass usage of the mobile internet Yahoo reckons that 2007 is the year it started for real. “Within 10 years more people will be accessing the Internet from their mobile…than in the home from a PC,” said Geraldine Wilson, vice president of connected life at Yahoo Europe..."In emerging markets most people’s first contact with the Internet will be with a mobile phone” reports Total Telecom. That’s nothing new, of course, people in the industry have been predicting that a large number of people accessing the internet through mobiles in developing countries would soon make that the most common device for logging on. The article goes on to point out that PCs and landlines won’t disappear because there’s a lot of applications and services that work best on big screens (and need lots of bandwidth, but that can be overcome). It doesn’t attempt to address the big question, which is how content and service providers can make their offerings work well on a range of devices and a range of access speeds.
